Less Responsibility from the County Government
It seems like you barely get over the task of being disgusted with these tax increase proposals from the Milwaukee County Board and another one gets thrown on the table. About one day after the tax proposal to raise the sales tax in Milwaukee County one half percent to fund the transit system, a new tax proposal to raise the sales tax in Milwaukee County one half percent comes to fund the parks. Of course, the Milwaukee County Board only has two ideas for raising taxes-a wheel tax and a sales tax. After the board thought about raising the sales tax to fund public transit, the needed a new tax to fund the parks. After about a half hour, there had started hurting because they could not come up with an idea so they too decided to pile on with the sales tax.
Mind you, this is not a half percent tax increase to fund everything. This will be raising the sales tax in Milwaukee County, one full percentage point. One can only conclude one thing -- the county supervisors are not looking out for the citizens of this county. They are only interested in funding their own political interests at the expense of everyone else. In Milwaukee County, leadership is defined by bringing up a dumb idea, and try to force it on all of the citizens lying to us thinking that you are doing things in everybody's best interest.
Raising property taxes is clearly a bad choice too. However, the property tax is tax-deductible. Well, the sales tax is also. But you only get to deduct either the sales tax or the property tax on your federal return. In Wisconsin, the property tax would be the one most people would deduct. This does not mean that there is a lot of room to grow the sales tax. We know, property taxes will not be going down.
It is getting to the point that you will not be able to shop in Milwaukee County. If these tax proposals go through, I will be shopping in a neighboring counties where the prices may be the same, but the tax will be 1 1/2 percentage points lower than it is in Milwaukee. Last month, even demonstrated that the public transit system is not needed. In pursuit of a handout, thousands of people were able to find their own transportation downtown to stand in line for hours waiting for food stamps. While in line, no one complained that there was no buses available to take them to their job. How many buses were running at 5 a.m. when everyone began to form the line? People would knock you down to get something for free. Even if it's a dog end.
Scott Walker is the only person in local government, that is clearly standing up adhering to principals rejecting tax increases. Jim Doyle has demonstrated that Scott Walker is needed to be our next governor. Unfortunately, I do not believe that there is someone in Milwaukee County, who has enough gall to stand up for what he believes like Walker has. Let's just hope our next county executive will not roll over and raise taxes like the tax-and-spend liberals we have on the County Board.
