Never before have I seen times like these. Well, I'm not that old so maybe that's a good thing. This nation once saw government as the problem. Government was not to be trusted, and all politicians were crooks. Government was too big, government was too slow, government took too much of our money. But recently attitudes seem to have changed.
Government is now to be viewed as the source of our solutions. It is the all seeing eye. It is our guardian and savior. It is like the parent that you can always turn to when the rest of the world is turning its back. The government that was once too big now needs to grow and increase its oversight. The government that was to slow now needs to act quickly to save our economy. But government that took too much of our money is now broke and is telling us that we either need to raise taxes or cut the services. We like our government services so soon we may be begging for more taxation.
We've witnessed, truly, a defining moment in world history this week. After the debate between Sen. Joe Biden and Tina Fey, er, Sarah Palin, came to a close the word "maverick" became, officially, a big honkin' cliche. I said it before, I'll say it again: you can't call yourself a maverick and actually be a maverick. There's nothing "mavericky".
Meanwhile, John McCain must be living in a bubble, because he thought the governor performed magnificently. And it's true, she did beat the spread by actually creating complete grammatical sentences a few times during the debate. Her third grade advisors were definitely on their game. With apologies to Senator Biden, whenever I listen to Sarah Palin, here's what I hear when she speaks: a noun, a verb, and "maverick". Enough already!
I just wanted to post a quickie today to inform everyone out there that Glendale will have on its agenda today an item regarding terminating its agreement for marketing with the former Greater Milwaukee Convention and Visitors Bureau, now Visit Milwaukee. The idea is, if I understand it correctly, that Glendale collects a hotel tax which is used in part to feed Visit Milwaukee's marketing budget. According to a recent news article, 35% of that tax goes to Visit Milwaukee.
The objective here, I suppose, is twofold. First, Visit Milwaukee is not Visit Glendale. We might get more bang for our buck if we focus our energies on our own community. Second, it keeps our tax dollars right here in Glendale.
As Governor Palin has explicitly announced, "the gloves are off." They certainly are. Behind in the polls, McCain and Palin now plan a below-the-belt, bigoted, lie-filled attack on Barack Obama. There are no dignity, stature, or honesty left in the ammunition of the right-wing to be fired from now until election day.
"The most striking contradiction of our civilization is the fundamental reverence for truth which we profess and the thoroughgoing disregard for it which we practice." -Vilhjalmur Stefansson [And in America we further try to cloak it in doing what is best for the "common man" when those most vehemently defending Joe Sixpack have 7 or 8 homes, millions in assets, and are totally out of touch with the voter]
After being placed on the hook for a $700 billion financial bailout, I think we're due a few answers. First, and most basic is who is to blame for this big mess? Is it the oligarchs on Wall Street? Is it the politicians in Washington? Is it the Americans who have spent more than they earn for long periods of time? Is it the mortgage brokers who gave mortgages to people who could not afford them?
Those questions will of course, not be answered. But, just as important is to make sure that we are getting the right solution. And again, I am not confident that that will happen either. Is the best we can do is to make sure that it does not happen again? My class seems half full of optimism.
When Senator John McCain pointed to Barack Obama derisively and said, "that one," what did he mean? In the recent debate, McCain's well-known temper got the best of him ...again. But this was more than a slip of the tongue, it was an insight into John McCain's deepest demons. Just what did McCain mean? What slipped out? Who would insensitively make such a reference toward another human being? How much hatred does McCain harbor for Obama? Is the hatred so deep that he would slip to making racial references? Does McCain consider himself above Obama? Does McCain know how much historical bigotry is tied up in that sort of human reference? And yes, it is fair to ask: is McCain a bigot?
John McCain scares the heck out of me. He has loaded up his campaign team with some of the most obvious special interest promoters in America [i.e. Phil Gramm]. He has done the bidding of the oil, insurance, and pharmaceutical industries. He has proposed giving MORE tax breaks to the richest people in the U.S., those who are not suffering today as the average American is. He has offered a campaign promise to give oil corporations more benefits. He has played to the extreme right-wing of his party. He selected a running mate who has no national or international experience, and a woman whom he met on one or two occasions. Though waving his military experience every chance he gets, he voted AGAINST veterans benefit packages in the Senate. He was dead wrong on invading Iraq, a sovereign nation that had nothing to do with 9-11 and distracting us from catching Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan [where we had him surrounded and at our mercy in Bora Bora]. His proposals for the future will drive us trillions of MORE dollars into debt. John McCain is a lackey for the same powers that pull the strings for George W. Bush. McCain actually supports Bush's policies. John McCain did the bidding in the Senate for the leaders of the savings and loan scandal. John McCain does not know how many houses he owns. And yes, to you Christian fundamentalist Bible-thumpers, John McCain is divorced.
When will we ever learn? After a disastarous reign of Republican, right-wing presidents in the 1920s, the stock market and the rest of the U.S. economy collapsed in a heap. A liberal Democrat had to rescue America and right the ship. FDR actually saved American capitalism. So please do not attack this historical fact: a liberal Democrat in the White House saved capitalism for the United States. The corporate right-wing had selfishly ravaged everything they could from the common man in the U.S. They not only bled the average American of everything, they almost brought down the very economic system they championed. We learned that capitalism must have restraints and regulations or it will rape everything in its path. After World War II, the other capitalistic nations in Europe learned this lesson and have all established social democracies. Right-wingers try to label them socialistic. And these same right-wingers go ballistic when we in turn label corporate capitalism, fascistic. But it was a group of American capitalists who helped finance Hitler to power in Germany, and Mussolini in Italy.
Now to our current economic dilemma. Regulation after regulation has been stripped from the American economy. Corporate America has had its way, especially since Ronald Reagan. Reagan, like the current president, was not of high aptitude, to say the least. And his political success was the result of surrendering economic, moral, and ethical principles to the right-wing, corporate behemoths. They gave him money. They gave him access to the populace. They helped him to forge a story to tell Americans about the wonders of capitalism, especially corporate unfettered capitalism. "Trickle-down" was a favorite myth. But their policies ultimately trickled up. You are now left holding the bag, including the first installment on your taxes: a 700-billion-dollar DEBT. More will be needed. They have used their greed as a shovel to dig you deep into a hole.
The Supreme Court has begun its annual fall session. They have picked the cases in which they will decide. In a news release, the media reported that the Spring Court has not taken up any cases on abortion, race, or other social issues which can polarize the citizens of the country.
What is all that about? Don't we as citizens, like to be polarized? Don't we like to discuss with our neighbors, coworkers and friends topics in which we can point out how they are wrong? Isn't this what America is all about? Nothing is more empowering than standing up and telling people how they are wrong. At the very least, it makes for lively parties. Tried this at the next gathering you are going to be at. Or at least by Thanksgiving with family. You will be the life of your party, guaranteed.
The recent John McCain town hall meetings in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and elsewhere had American citizens from the right-wing stand up and not only ask questions about Barack Obama, but make the most violent and dangerous charges like he should be killed, he is a Arab, he is a Moslem, etc. Are you ashamed to be an American? Are you ashamed of some of your fellow Americans? You should be.
From the moment Obama received the nomination for president at the Democratic Party convention, a cold chill went up my spine. I knew there are people in America who harbor so much bigotry or so much "religious" zealotry that they could be moved to make an assassination try on Obama if things did not go according to right-wing preferences. Yikes!
We are now entering the final three weeks of on over two year presidential campaign. What started out as a breath of fresh air, a new era of history, and an open campaign has become a whimpering pile of negativity. The campaigns started out covering issues of immigration and the war in Iraq. It has now moved on to the economy-which it should. Most presidential elections are decided on the economy even in times of war.
Elections have been decided when times were good and when times were bad. In tough economic times, the party in power has generally been changed. This time will be no different. The Democrats are gearing up for a victory and of realigning election. However, they have been the majority party in Congress over two years, and their approval rating is lower than the president's. And that's nothing to be proud of.
Will we finally learn from this economic disaster, or are we going to have to go through this again in the years ahead? You have been fleeced by runaway capitalism in the U.S. And now you have been called upon to "save" the capitalists who stole from you and now want you to be their savior. Here is what American capitalism wants from you:
No regulations on capitalism's profits, use the general populace's taxes to pay for capitalism's losses. What a deal!
The presidential debates had not produced a memorable moment or a knockout punch. Although in the last debate, one of the more memorable moments I think, was a Freudian and slip by John McCain. He referred to Sen. Obama and Sen. Government. But there's too much truth in that line to chuckle and forget.
If the polls hold up, and they are correct, neither of which can be guaranteed, America could be facing a watershed moment. We could be in a time changing time, the likes we have not seen in many years. We could be facing the most liberal and the most expansive government growth in 45 to 75 years. Apparently people's distrust of government is over. The era of government being too big, too invasive and too costly as ended. We will not enter the era of shared wealth.
"If only God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name at a Swiss bank." -Woody Allen
"What is the new loyalty? It is, above all, conformity. It is the uncritical and unquestioning acceptance of America as it is....It rejects inquiry into race questions or socialized medicine, or public housing...regards as heinous any challenge to what is called 'the system of private enterprise,' identifying that system with Americanism. It abandons evolution, repudiates the once popular concept of progress, and regards America as a finished product, perfect and complete." -Henry Steele Commager
Coming soon to a store near you: The Palin Collection. By RNC.
Two days ago, I was getting psyched to write about the latest revelation about the Vice Maverick. An AP investigation revealed that Sarah Palin had charged to the State of Alaska about $21,000 in travel expenses for her children. Here's the fun part: After reporters started to snoop around in her executive affairs, she ordered the expense vouchers she submitted changed to suggest her familys' presence was official. This included hotels, air fare, and, of course, a snowmobile race. A snowmobile race? You know what I say to that? MUSH! MUSH! The governor justified those expenses by claiming that her daughters were invited to participate in official functions, an assertion that has been notably refuted. It seems, instead, that Governor Palin would either ask the event sponsor to invite her family, or they'd just show up. As far as I know, she hasn't explained why she changed the bills before investigators got to them. Three weeks before Republican
presidential nominee Sen. John McCain chose Palin his running mate, and
after Alaska reporters asked for the records, Palin ordered changes to
those expense reports, previously filed. In the newly polished documents, Palin added phrases such as "First Family
attending" and "First Family invited" to explain and justify the girls' attendance.
Just Like Bil Keane on the Family Circus, Bernard will be taking a short leave of absence and this edition of Logos of the Bogus will be written by me, his adoptive son, Shadow, age 10. ( you humans have to have pointed out that I am a cat). What I would like to discuss are some of the lessons that I have learned by watching people discuss the upcoming election. It has taken me a while to type this out because I do not have an index finger and I don't understand your alphabets. The first one goes ABCD, and now I have to work on one that goes QWERT.
Both four and eight years ago, the Republicans outspent the Democrats in the presidential race. When this happened, the Liberals got out and yelled "foul!" Democrats accused Republicans of buying and stealing the elections. However, this year is different. This year the Democrats are outspending the Republicans by wide margins. Barack Obama is outspending John McCain by huge amounts. I don't know what the totals are because that would involve research. And my associate here at Logos of the Bogus just went off for his afternoon nap.
An Obama administration is gearing up to raise taxes. Vice presidential nominee Joe Biden thinks that this is patriotic. The tax-and-spend liberals must have a lot of money. They can send donations to the Obama camp and still have money left over for higher taxes. This would not bother me except they are the ones who want to force tax increases on me too. Obama thinks he can save 10 billion dollars per month by not spending it in Iraq. This is how he will however, Obama also wants to rebuild the infrastructure of the United States with the same amount of money being spent in Iraq. I don't see how this adds up. Saving money yet spending it.
...the Republicans, then Barack Obama is an extremist Black Christian. He's also an extremist Muslim. If you believe the Republicans, then Barack Obaama is an anarchist. A socialist. A marxist. The most absent senator in Congress. He's also the most liberal senator in Congress. He's a foreign born Muslim! No, he's the New York liberal elite! If you believe the Republicans, then Barack Obama is an Indonesian-born citizen constitutionally unqualified to serve as President. He's also a member of the New York liberal elite. He's also . As well as foreign-born evangelical Christian Muslim extremist bent on anarchy, socialism,
Is the Presidency becoming damaged good?
On election day, the tax-and-spend liberals a Milwaukee County are ready willing and able to do whatever it takes to insult its citizens, lie to the taxpayers," under estimate the intelligence of the people of Milwaukee County. Yes, they are trying to trick you into believing their lies that they will actually reduce the tax burden in the county. They want us to believe that they are actually going to reduce property taxes by measurable amounts. As we've seen in the past, nothing is further from the truth. They want you to volunteer for a high sales tax. The tax-and-spend liberals of Milwaukee County must believe that if you are going to elect Barack Obama as president, you are already geared up for higher taxes, so let's just throw the sales tax into the mix. It's your vote.
However, they are expecting a windfall of the sales tax just like the County Stadium District tax. The amounts coming in are higher than the projections. If the sales taxes tripled, like they want it, the County Board will be a wash in funds. They can spend it however they want because much more is coming in than expected so there's a lot to be wasted. The Milwaukee journalsentinel also has run some editorial letters in favor of the tax. Although that does not surprise me, I disagree with the nonchalant attitude of saying we have gotten past the pension scandal so let's get past that and raise our taxes anyway. Again this is an example of the tax-and-spend liberal who is only paying the minimum yet wants everyone else to pay more.
