Residents for Off-leash Milwaukee Parks (ROMP) and the Milwaukee County Park System are pleased to announce the season’s final “Doggie Dip” at Cool Waters Aquatic Park after the pool is closed to the public for the swimming season.  A presale of admission passes will be offered during open hours at Cool Waters the day before the dip on Sunday, Sept. 5 from 10am-6pm.

Off-Leash Dog Exercise Area Permits are on sale now until the end of the year for only $15 for access to all five Off-Leash Dog Exercise Areas in Milwaukee County Parks.  These include:  Currie Park -3535 N. Mayfair Rd., Granville -11718 W. Good Hope Place, Estabrook Park - 440 N. Estabrook Dr., Runway - 1214 E. Rawson Ave., and Warnimont Park - 6100 S. The Wehr Nature Center, 9701 W. College Ave., in Franklin invites children, their families and friends to its Astronomy Day Fair on Sunday, August 29 from 1-4pm.  Children can have their picture taken on the moon in a spacesuit and also experience a day of telescopes, fun in the Starlab, games and prizes. Children ages 7-18 with a parent present may enter a drawing to win a free telescope. To win the child must be present at the 3:30pm drawing.   

Members of the Wehr Astronomical Society will bring telescopes with appropriate filters and invite everyone to look for sunspots. Sessions in the inflatable Starlab will occur each hour where participants can view the Milky Way. Solar system walks as well as a walk from the Sun to Pluto will be available. Astronomy crafts and games will add to the fun.    Moon cookies, food and popcorn may be purchased. General admission is $1 per person with the regular parking fee of $3 per car in effect. For more information go to countyparks.com or call the Wehr Nature Center at (414) 425-8550.

Seventy six teams are scheduled to play in the Milwaukee County Park’s 2010 Softball playoffs at Wilson and West Milwaukee Park sponsored by Miller Lite. The first game will be played on Sunday, August 22 at 6:00 pm. The championship games will be played on August 27 beginning at 6:00 pm.

“The playoffs bring people around the county into the tournament,” said Dan Roddy, Wilson Park Unit Coordinator. “The teams had to earn the right to the playoffs.” Most teams had to have the best record in their league or win a tiebreaker game to advance.

The Wisconsin State Fair and Kosciuszko Community Center Advisory Board will present a State of Wisconsin Bench Press & Dead Lift Competitions at the Jeffrey Scott Activity Stage at State Fair Park on Saturday, August 14. Trophies will be awarded to the 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd places in each of nine categories for both the Bench Press and the Dead Lift Events. In recent years, competitors have lifted over 600 lbs. in the bench press event. The Mitchell Park Domes, 524 S. Layton Boulevard, will host the 1^st annual Milwaukee Domes Art Festival Friday, Aug. 20^th noon to 7pm, Sat. Aug. 21^st 10am to 7pm and concluding on Sunday, Aug. 22 from 10am to 4pm.  Meet over 80 elite, contemporary, juried fine artists.  See artists paint masterworks on the Mitchell Park grounds Friday and Saturday.  Live music will fill the air as performance artists delight festivalgoers.  Amateur artwork by children to be created onsite and be viewed in the future artist pavilion.  Investment quality art for sale, as well as affordable art gifts, and a silent art auction to benefit the domes will be held at the festival and live on the festival website at www.milwaukeedomesartfestival.com.

Milwaukee County’s Kosciuszko Park, 2201 S. 7^th Street, will provide their fifth annual National Night Out - free to the public - on Tuesday, August 3 from 4pm to 8pm. Free admission to Pelican Cove swimming pool will also be offered. The event will feature a children’s area with games and prizes. Safe & Sound Community Partners will provide neighborhood Safety and Block Watch Information. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad, Mounted Patrol, Bike Patrol, ATV Units, Milwaukee Fire Department and Bell Ambulance Tours will also be part of this community event.  For more information call the Kosciuszko Community Center at (414) 645-4624.

Milwaukee County Supervisors Patricia Jursik and Marina Dimitrijevic are pleased to announce the opening of the new Warnimont Dog Exercise Area serving the South Shore. The public is invited to a grand opening ceremony at Warnimont Park in Cudahy on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 10 a.m. Parking is available at the Kelly Senior Center, 6100 S. Lake Drive in Cudahy.  Dogs welcome of course.

Malibu Boats and Milwaukee County Parks have teamed up to bring the 2010 Malibu Open to Veteran’s Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Dr., on August 6-7. Records are ready to be rewritten with Malibu as the official towboat. Sixty of the world’s top slalom and jump skiers will be competing for $50,000 in prize money on the smooth waters of Veteran’s Park.  For more information about this free event go to countyparks.com

 The historic era and "Can Do" attitude of Wisconsin's own CCC camps are brought to life on July 22 at the Washington Park Senior Center, 4420 W. Join the celebration!  On Sunday, July 18th the beautiful Grant Park, 100 E. US Bank Fireworks are scheduled to occur on Saturday, July 3 at Veterans Park, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, beginning at 9:30pm.  The firework's display will last about one hour.  Veteran’s Park Special Event Parking Operations will begin on July 3 at 6am. (There will be no overnight parking in Veteran’s Park on July 2). Parking fees for cars will be $20, cars with trailers $60, RV parking $60 and RVs with trailers $80. A free Kite Festival will take place in the afternoon during the 3^rd at Veteran’s Park, as well.  For additional information go to countyparks.com

The 2010 summer deep well pool swim season in Milwaukee County Parks is open everyday from 1pm to 5pm. Children at each pool are invited to sign up for swim lessons at the pool of their choice. The season’s outdoor deep well pool open hours are 1-5pm daily. The outdoor county pools daily admission rates for 12 + is $2.00 and the daily rate for 3 - 11 is $1. New this year is the addition of an “AquaTrack” that will be set up on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Sheridan Pool June 21 –July 9, McCarty Pool July 12- July 30^th and Washington Pool Aug. 2^nd – Aug. 20^th.   (*Please note - Grobschmidt Pool is closed for repairs at this time)

The Splash Pads at Dineen, Madison, Carver, Gordon, Clarke Square and Washington Park are open from 11am to 5p everyday. Wading Pools at Hales Corners, Rainbow, Smith, Rose, Columbus, West Milwaukee, Pulaski-Cudahy, Vogel, Cooper, Cannon, Tiefenthaler and Walker Square Park are now open.  All other wading pools are scheduled to open on Sat. Milwaukee County Parks will open its summer concert season with a free concert featuring King Solomon on Friday, June 4 from 7pm-9pm.  A traditional Milwaukee Fish Fry will be served with either baked or fried cod that evening at the Brown Deer park golf clubhouse as well from 4pm-8pm.

This year’s concert series will include a variety of genres for the public to enjoy for free.  Concert attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy the live music.  Concessions from Milwaukee County Park’s trucks as well as refreshments from various local restaurants will be available. Additionally, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra with sponsorship from US Bank will open the season at Boerner Botanical Gardens with a free performance on Tuesday, June 8 at 7:00pm.   

Enjoy your Friday Night Fish Fry in the beautiful surroundings of Brown Deer, Grant or Whitnall Park Golf Clubhouses.  Join the popular Friday Fish Fry served in the parks every Friday, now through Labor Day Weekend 4-8pm (4-9pm at Whitnall).  Savor baked or fried cod with French fries or buttered potatoes, coles slaw, rye bread and a cookie.  Cost per person for a traditional fish fry is $9.25 ($9.75 at Brown Deer), kids portion for age 12 & under is $4.25 ($4.75 at Brown Deer).
