SCHOOLSCENE

· Fifth-grader Owen Porter and sixth-grader Madeline Steffes, students at Glen Hills Middle School in Glendale, and Katie Branigan of Mequon, a seventh-grader at St. Monica School in Whitefish Bay, earned awards in the Wisconsin Center for the Book's annual Letters about Literature contest. Katie won first place for grades seven and eight, and Owen won second place and Madeline honorable mention for grades four through six.

· The following students earned $2,500 National Merit Scholarship awards based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test: from Mequon, Caitlin Geary and Mitchell Plamann, students at Homestead High School; and from Shorewood High School, Story Sandy.

·Matthew Traudt of Whitefish Bay made the fall semester dean's list at the University of Minnesota.
