Nearly two dozen residents, concerned for the safety of their children, want the Village Board to adopt a sex offender ordinance similar to that of neighboring communities.
The residents are upset because convicted sex offender Anthony Jazinski, 41, has moved into a house at 8314 N. Regent Road, near a park frequented by neighborhood children. There is also a school bus stop directly in front of Jazinski's residence.
The board in 2007 considered an ordinance that would restrict where sex offenders could live in the village, but believing such ordinances would not stand a court test, it did not adopt that type of ordinance.
"We are one of the few suburbs in the county that allow any sex offenders to live here," said resident Kristy Suing. She asked the board to consider an ordinance similar to those in Glendale, Brown Deer and Bayside.
Those ordinances do not allow convicted sex offenders who have not previously lived in the communities to move to them after being released from prison, create child safety zones where offenders cannot go, and prohibit offenders from living within a specified distance from places such as schools, daycares, parks and so on.
The current village ordinance prohibits sex offenders from loitering within 2,000 feet of schools or parks and within 200 feet of a daycare.
The village ordinance also prohibits sex offenders from passing out Halloween candy or dressing up like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny within 30 days of those holidays.
According to the village Web site, in July 2004 Jazinski was convicted in Dodge County Circuit Court of Repeated Second Degree Sexual Assault of the same child. The victim was known to him and lived in a house where Jazinski resided for approximately 2 months. Jazinski is under Extended Supervision with the Department of Corrections for 6 1/2 years and is prohibited from having unsupervised contact with females under the age of 18. Jazinski is also on a GPS monitor.
The Village Board heard the parents' requests Tuesday night and will discuss it at its Oct. 12 meeting.
