Matching challenge nets $132K for Footbridge Friends in Fox Point
Donor extends offer to end of year
Fox Point — A donation-matching challenge has brought fundraising group Footbridge Friends $132,000 closer to its goal of $655,000 toward the cost of replacing the footbridge between Bridge and Barnett lanes.
The challenge, issued in April by an anonymous donor, stated that pledges or donations of $5,000 or more, as well as significantly increased gifts from earlier donors, would be matched up to $100,000.
Since then donors have contributed $66,000 in new or increased pledges, which when matched by the anonymous donor brings total pledges over the $400,000 mark, according to a Footbridge Friends news release. The group has now passed the 60 percent mark, taking in donations from nearly 300 individuals.
The century-old footbridge was demolished in August after being closed for several years due to safety concerns. The Village Board last year loaned Footbridge Friends $30,000 to kick start a professional fundraising campaign. That amount, plus half of an estimated $1.25 million dollar replacement cost, constitutes the group's $655,000 goal. Footbridge Friends has promised to repay its loan to the village before using any other money on the project.
According to the Footbridge Friends news release, the anonymous donor has extended the offer to match new pledges of $1,000 or more until Dec. 31.
"While I have been encouraged by the generosity of residents across the village who want a new footbridge, the extension of this offer to match donations is incredibly appreciated," Schwartz said in the release. "If 50 new donors each pledge $1,000, the match will bring this project past the half-million dollar amount."
