UWM professor earns fellowship status from group

Mequon resident Rachel Spilka, associate professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, was named a fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing on March 17, during the association's annual conference in Louisville, Ky. This rank, bestowed to only one member per year, recognizes exemplary contributions in teaching, research and service to the field.

At UWM, Spilka has served as coordinator of the Professional Writing Program and undergraduate coordinator for the English Department. She has also taught at Purdue and the University of Maine-Orono. She has developed many of the more than 30 courses she has offered over the course of her career. She also has worked as a writer or editor for RAND Corporation, MicroSym, American Institutes for Research, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Houghton-Mifflin Publishing.
