Local professor to lead study on hearing loss in children
The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders. Whitefish Bay resident Dr. Katherine Shim, assistant professor of pediatrics at the college, will be the lead investigator of the study.
The grant will be used to study the genetic effects of mutations that lead to hearing loss and balance disorders in children. Genetic disorders are believed to cause more than 50 percent of all hearing loss at birth. Thirty-nine percent of hearing loss and balance disorders are believed to be caused by malformed inner ears.
Results from the study seek to bring new therapies to treat inner ear disorders.
