Tennis player Winston earns academic honors
Nicolet graduate and junior Danielle Winston of the Muhlenberg College women's tennis team was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll for excellence in the classroom and on the court.
To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, a student must be a sophomore or higher in class standing; a starter or key reserve on her team; and carry at least a 3.40 cumulative grade-point average.
A double major in psychology and Spanish, Winston was a team captain. She was 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the Centennial Conference at third singles. She won her final four matches of the season, all in straight sets, and has a career singles mark of 26-16.
Winston paired with classmate Lindsay Schmidt at second doubles. They were 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the CC. The duo closed out the season by winning four straight matches, two of which it won, 8-0, to remain in a tie with another active pair of Mules for the most career wins (28) by a doubles team in spring dual matches in program history.
Golfer Schultz named Big Ten Freshman of the Year
The Big Ten Conference recently announced that University of Michigan freshman golfer Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay was the unanimous selection as the league Freshman of the Year.
Schultz becomes only the second Michigan player to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, following Andy Matthews' (1999-2002) selection in 1999.
In his first season in Ann Arbor, Schultz started all 11 events and is currently on pace to set the freshman scoring average record with a 73.47 per round average. He has shot 10 of his 30 rounds at-or-below par this season, including a career-best and Michigan season-best, six-under 66 shot in the first round of the 2009 Bridgestone Intercollegiate (Oct. 24-25).
Schultz was named to the all-tournament team at the Big Ten Match Play Championships after posting a 2-0-1 record. During the season he posted three top-10 individual finishes with one among the top five, following his fifth-place finish at the 2010 Big Ten Championships (April 30-May 2), which earned him all-tournament honors.
In addition, Schultz's fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships marked the highest-ever finish by a Michigan freshman and his total of 287 (69-73-71-74) set the Michigan freshman 72-hole scoring record.
