Rarely does a team go the final 11-plus minutes of a game without a basket and actually move closer to the state tournament. But top-seeded Milwaukee King did just that in a 52-46 victory over fifth-seeded Nicolet in a Division 1 sectional semifinal.
Coach Corey Wolf had to dig deep in the archives to find the last time a Nicolet girls basketball team had the level of success the current Knights have experienced this regular season.
Big games are par for the course in Nicolet's girls' basketball program. At Germantown, prime-time affairs are still a whole new animal. The difference in experience, execution and overall performance were all evident Friday night - especially early. The visiting Knights raced to a 25-10 lead after the first quarter, held a comfortable advantage most of the game and toppled the Warhawks.
The Brookfield Central girls basketball team played its first game in the school's brand-spanking new gymnasium, but Nicolet was a less-than-gracious guest.
As far as Nicolet's Rachel Morello was concerned, there were no negatives when her sister, Melissa, joined the varsity volleyball team last year.
