Marquette Law School honored with Jewish Family Services award

Jewish Family Services Milwaukee presented the first-ever Chair’s Community Caring Award to Marquette University Law School for its outstanding commitment to helping the less fortunate in the community. Jewish Family Services Board Chair Nathan Fishbach, a resident of Fox Point, and Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Rebecca Dallet presented the award to Marquette Law School Dean Joseph Kearney at its annual meeting Monday, Sept. 14. Kearney accepted the award on behalf of the school, professors and students.

The Chair’s Community Caring Award honors individuals and organizations in the community who embrace the JFS core value “to care for those among us in need, not as a burden, but as a mitzvah (obligation).” In presenting the award, JFS said Marquette Law School is a worthy recipient as it serves as an example to the community through the active implementation of programs that have the goal of “being the difference” in the lives of the less fortunate.

JFS noted a variety of Marquette Law School programs including; the “M-LINC” Program that provides legal assistance to non-profit organizations; the “Dispute Resolution College for Kids” that works with Milwaukee Public Schools in encouraging conflict resolution in inner city schools; the Milwaukee Foreclosure Mediation Program that addresses the foreclosure crisis by helping lenders and borrowers rework the terms of mortgages that would otherwise be foreclosed upon.

In addition, JFS noted, “Marquette Law School also provides legal assistance to hundreds of needy clients annually through the Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic, and it assists Wisconsin’s valued service members experiencing civilian legal issues affecting military service readiness through the Service members and Veterans Legal Assistance of Wisconsin. Marquette Law School serves as a role model to future leaders by teaching and practicing the value of and obligation to perform community service.”
