OPEN BOOK COOP PRESENTS BELDEN PAULSON THE PRACTICAL VISIONARY

January 16

Shorewood – Belden Paulson has lead an extraordinary life. He has worked throughout the world to help build sustainable, eco-intentional communities. From United Nations projects to Milwaukee urban affairs, Belden Paulson has dedicated his life to others.

Come hear the man at the Open Book Coop (4093 N. Oakland Avenue in Shorewood at 2:00 p.m., January 16.

Paulson has dedicated his life to building a better world. He and wife, Lisa, have done it locally and globally. From re-settling the cave-dwelling residents of the bombed-out waterfront of Naples after World War II, to helping the refugees fleeing the Eastern Block and creating an intentional community on Sardinia, to helping the indigenous peoples of Brazil and being labeled a CIA spy to Lisa going through a cleansing ceremony to rid her of a native’s curse, Belden and Lisa have built and re-built communities and lives.

His recently released book (on the shelf of Open Book Coop under “Nature”) details his life works. More than a book of memories, Belden hopes his book will serve as a tool kit for those involved in building and bettering our community.

Belden helped create and served as the first Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Urban Affairs to address inner city poverty and racism. In the 1960s, he and Lisa created an eco-intentional community near Plymouth, Wisconsin, called “High Wind.”

Hazel Henderson, futurist and alternative economist, said Paulson’s book, Odyssey of a Practical Visionary, chronicles events in an important era in U.S., and global history-pointing the way to a better future for the human family.

Belden Paulson is recognized for his contributions to urban education, sustainable living, futures studies, community development and refugee resettlement.

Lisa Paulson, author in her own right, was so moved by the connection she discovered, while creating their experimental, ecological community, High Wind, she wrote, "Voices from a Sacred Land," blending the spirit of the land with the physical. She found the land exciting; enchanting. "Voices" is her expression of the love, admiration and respect of the land; the connection she unearthed.

Joint us January 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Open Book Coop at 4093 N. Oakland Avenue in Shorewood, Wisconsin.
